The circuit drivers couldn’t stop talking about

The Circuit Drivers Couldn't Stop Talking About

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is an undulating circuit with elevation changes unlike any other track on the Formula 1® calendar. Almost every corner arrives without a clear sightline, which means drivers are committing to lines they cannot fully see, carrying speed into sections that punish hesitation. When Formula 1® first visited in 2020, the reaction from drivers was immediate and unanimous: this was something different. Portimão returns to the calendar in 2027 for the first time since 2021.

The Algarve beyond the circuit

The Algarve Beyond the Circuit

The Autódromo sits in the hills above Portimão, a historic fishing and resort town on Portugal's southern coast. The wider Algarve offers some of Europe's most celebrated beaches, including Praia da Rocha and Praia de Benagil, as well as the dramatic cliffs and caves of the Ponta da Piedade near Lagos. The region's food culture is centred on Atlantic seafood — chargrilled sardines, percebes, cataplana de peixe — alongside the broader Portuguese table: bifanas, pastel de nata and Alentejo wines.

A race and a holiday in one

A Race and a Holiday in One

Faro Airport (FAO) is approximately 65 km from the circuit, with direct connections from most major European cities throughout the year. The Algarve is one of Europe's most visited tourist destinations, meaning hotels, transport infrastructure and services in the region are well established for international visitors. Race weekend pairs naturally with a wider stay in the region — making Portimão one of the most accessible and rewarding additions to the Formula 1® calendar for European fans.
