Racing at altitude
At 2,285 metres above sea level, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is the highest circuit on the Formula 1® calendar. The thin air reduces aerodynamic downforce, meaning teams run lower-drag setups, and F1 cars regularly exceed 350 km/h on the main straight. The 1.2 km main straight is among the longest on the calendar, with cars arriving at Turn 1 from 330 km/h in one of the most ferocious braking zones of the season. The altitude also affects tyres, brakes, cooling and engine performance, making Mexico one of the most technically challenging rounds of the year.
The Foro Sol
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is the only Formula 1® circuit in the world where the track runs through a major concert stadium. The Foro Sol, now Estadio GNP Seguros, holds up to 65,000 for concerts, and during race weekend, approximately 40,000 fans fill its stands to form a complete amphitheatre around the final section of the lap. The roar as cars enter the stadium at Turn 12 is one of the most distinctive sounds in the sport. The podium ceremony takes place on the stadium floor, with drivers celebrating directly in front of the crowd.
A Weekend of Colour
The Mexico City Grand Prix has often coincided with the country's Día de los Muertos celebrations, when the city fills with marigolds, calaveras and street festivities. Combined with one of the most visually spectacular crowds in Formula 1® — colourful, costumed and vocal throughout the weekend — the race carries an atmosphere close to a citywide festival.
